Homemade Baby Wipes

Simple Recipe for Homemade Baby Wipes

Before Sequoia was born, we tried to prepare our home like all parents do. This included buying all the supplies we thought we would need before actually meeting our precious little one. Baby wipes are on the top of every new parent’s list, and that’s just what we set out to get.

Looking at the selection, I could not fathom spending the loot for the top of the line, organic, fragrance-free, premium baby wipes. Come on! We have a baby on the way and we’ve been spending all this extra money already.

So I bought what I thought was the safest option for what I felt like we could afford at the time. I felt total guilt after taking a closer look at the ingredients at home, because I recognized some of them as being on our family’s list of no-go’s.

Many ingredients found in baby wipes should be avoided, even those that are advertised to be “Natural”, “Pure”, and “Fragrance-Free”. You will not only find these harmful ingredients in the “natural” versions that Huggies and Pampers have to offer, but they’re also in Seventh Generation, Kirkeland’s Non-Scented, Parents Choice fragrance-free, Member’s Mark Premium, Simple Truth, Alphanova Organic, etc.

These are the Toxic Ingredients to Avoid:

Bronopol (also known as 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1 and 3-Diol): This preservative releases formaldehyde as it breaks down and it’s an irritant that really should not be used in any baby products.

Double Chocolate Peppermint Flourless Brownie Recipe

Ready to get your chocolate sweet treat in this Valentine’s Day with zero guilt?!
I am ALL about treating yourself after growing up with a “candy drawer” (literally a drawer in the kitchen that was full of nothing but candy) and “bedtime snacks” consisting of cereal bowls full of ice-cream with all the toppings right before bed. A lot more health conscious these days, I’ve found a few recipes like this one where you can still have the sweet treats without the gut ache and guilt.
This recipe is full of everything you desire; dense, fudgy, double chocolate, peppermint brownies.
And for a bonus, they are Vegetarian, Gluten Free, have zero added sugar, and they’re flourless.
You can also try your favorite egg substitute to make these Vegan (although I have not yet tested these variations myself).

Why would you add Peppermint Vitality essential oil to your brownies?

  • For centuries, peppermint has been used to soothe digestive difficulties
  • Peppermint vitality essential oil can help curb appetite
  • Peppermint tastes incredibly refreshing alongside the double chocolate

Paleo Banana Bread Recipe

This is a recipe for soft and moist Paleo, Gluten Free, Vegetarian Banana Bread that will melt in your mouth. If your home is anything like ours, this bread will disappear so fast your bananas won’t ripen fast enough to make more.

My fiancé  likes to eat this treat for breakfast before heading out for a long laborious day at work. We also like to eat this as a healthy option for a sweet treat.

Try your egg substitutes to make this recipe Vegan (although I have not yet tested them myself).

As long as your bananas are ripened and eggs at room temperature, the prep time is only 10 minutes since everything goes right in your blender (we use a Ninja).

Why use Vitality Essential Oils to supplement your diet?

  • Taking Cinnamon Bark Vitality essential oil as a dietary supplement can support healthy digestion and help maintain a healthy immune system.***
  • Nutmeg Vitality oil has many health benefits, including cognitive function support, immune support, and powerful antioxidants.***
  • It is important to realize when using essential oils for dietary reasons to only use those that are truly pure and therapeutic and also approved for dietary consumption. Young Living’s Vitality line of essential oils is a great place to start for oils you can trust with seed to seal purity.

Simple Soothing Skin Cream Recipe: I am Beautiful…

This website is all about wellness. But how can we feel good if we don’t feel good about ourselves?

We try to balance a lot in our everyday lives; kids, family, multiple jobs, stress, fear, meal planning and preparing, cleaning and clutter, car repairs, debt, and so many other commitments.

Do we get overloaded? Absolutely!

Do we have the power to free ourselves! Most definitely.

It’s not necessary to bury ourselves under our own commitments. Try decluttering your life in a way that makes sense to you.

  • Does this mean donating things you don’t use anymore?
  • Getting rid of that blouse that’s missing a button and you’ve been saying your going to fix it for the last 4 years?
  • Meditating to help with stress or fear?
  • Asking for help once in a while?
  • Freeing time to make time to pamper ourselves?

Nourishing Lip Balm Recipe: Skip Those that Waste Your Money and Health

Have you ever noticed that people who use chapstick carry it with them and use it obsessively? Did you ever wonder if it was because of the ingredients put in it?

In most cases, the skin care industry and the people who decide what is put inside our products are only interested in making our products;

  • smell good,
  • feel good on initial contact, and
  • look good.

Many of the big companies do not care if it takes care of your skin long term or how it is detrimental to your overall health. They care about the instant gratification result. Other conventional skin care products, including lip balm, actually dry the skin out more so you continue to feel like you need more and have to purchase the product more. Have you ever seen the people who are totally addicted to putting lip balm or chapstick on and they do it countless times a day or hour? This is why.

When you use real products and ingredients that promote your wellness, you do not need much because your body is getting what it actually needs to heal itself overtime and feel good.

While we are working on doing amazing things for our body in the new year, concentrating on what we put inside is essential. In a perfect world, we are going to drink enough clean water, get all the nutrients our body needs from our diet, and the products we use will benefit our health and wellbeing.

But we do not live in a perfect world.

There are toxins in our water supplies and our soils have never been so depleted of nutrients. To combat that, we do the very best we can do everyday to help our bodies fight the toxic exposure we cannot control and focus on what we can control. We control the products that we bring in to our households and use on ourselves and families everyday.

Did you know that a lot of makeup, lipstick, and chapstick on the market have lead in them?! Continue reading “Nourishing Lip Balm Recipe: Skip Those that Waste Your Money and Health”

Chest Rub Recipe to Support Winter Wellness: Cold Season is Here

As we’re in the midst of cold season, I thought it would be important to let you know at least one way I use natural alternatives to support my winter wellness.

Real quick, I want to breakdown the chemical—1,4-dioxane— as it is one of the scariest chemicals found in many of our personal care products and it is a known carcinogen.

Research by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that 22 percent of personal care products and cosmetics may be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane. That’s 1 of every 4 products you use on yourself or your family.

As a label reader, the scariest part for me is, you won’t see it on the ingredient list. 1,4 dioxane is actually a trace contaminant or a byproduct made during the creation of other chemicals. Its not even needed in our products, but it is still there, not listed, and adding to the toxic stress we already fight on a day-to-day basis.

When 1,4 dioxane is found in mineral oils like petroleum jelly, it cannot be metabolized. This means it continues to build up in our bodies over time. Experts say mineral oil should not be used on children under 2 years of age because when inhaled it can cause reparatory distress. Poorly refined mineral oil can even cause certain skin cancers after prolonged repeated topical exposure. And they are not only found in petroleum jelly, but also in baby shampoos, baby lotions, and baby oils.

So here’s the good news. Continue reading “Chest Rub Recipe to Support Winter Wellness: Cold Season is Here”

I Have a Choice. Cancer Sucks. My Goals for 2018.

Disclaimer: I’m not perfect.

I may have started my day today with coffee and a run, then on to take a bath. But I also decided it was a good idea to bring a Bell’s Two Hearted Ale with me for my Lavender Soak. Why not?! It’s New Year’s Eve! We only have one life to live, and it can be pretty darn short.

It’s all about finding balance, sharing with others, feeling good about your health, and doing good things for your family.

Because of my past, I have this deep connection or feeling that with health eventually comes disease, cancer, grief, and loss.

I know that this is no way to think or live, but deep down the feeling has always been there. This is embarrassingly the most pessimistic side of my extremely optimistic mindset. I’m totally ashamed to admit it is there, but that does not change the fact that it is a part of me; a part of me that I am working to heal.

We all have our experiences to cope with, and this is mine. The way I cope with this feeling today is to actively
realize, I HAVE A CHOICE.

I have a choice in more than just my diet and how I exercise (but I’ve come to realize these are the big ones). I also have a choice in lifestyle and my toxic exposure.

CANCER SUCKS!

Many researchers now believe that only 5-10% of all cancer cases are from gene defects. What about the other 90-95%?!

My search for health and wellness solutions begins here… with a choice.

Can I really control my wellness and possibly help my body’s defenses against disease through diet, exercise, lifestyle choices, and limiting toxic exposure? Continue reading “I Have a Choice. Cancer Sucks. My Goals for 2018.”

Beard Balm: Manliness Guide to Beard Oils

Maybe this recipe can help as a last minute gift for the ‘oh so hard to gift’ manly man in your life!

This recipe is without artificial fragrances, colors, and chemicals that are doing your health NO good.

It’s made of natural ingredients that can actually help to promote your health. And guess what, it’s super cheap and simple to make!!

In this recipe, we use essential oils for their aroma and health benefits. We also use beeswax, butter, coconut oil, and a carrier oil. I am big on keeping it simple, so start with the butter and carrier oil you currently have. For example, the butter and oil I currently have are shea butter and sweet almond oil. These are some of my favorites! I have listed some other options below, but you’ll find what works best for you.

For the essential oils, just start smelling them and pick a nice blend. There is a list below with some that will benefit your hair, skin, or give the manliness aroma you are looking for.

Regardless of what I thought would be best, I asked MY man,  Zach, to pick a blend he preferred. This is what he chose; Cedarwood Essential Oil and Peppermint Essential Oil.

Now I’ve never had a beard, but I can only imagine that growing one means you’re joining a league of extraordinary men. Or maybe it means you’re going to have dry, itchy, flakey skin on your chin that’s growing a wild nest of scraggily dead ends. Let it be the first, and oil up buttercup! Nourish your skin and hair and wear that beard with the confidence of a man who’s just grabbed the bull by its horns, who carries an axe through the rugged backwoods, and smells like a god. Some of us might be busy like bees checking everything off of their seemingly endless list of things to get done.

Remember, stress kills.
