Chest Rub Recipe to Support Winter Wellness: Cold Season is Here

As we’re in the midst of cold season, I thought it would be important to let you know at least one way I use natural alternatives to support my winter wellness.

Real quick, I want to breakdown the chemical—1,4-dioxane— as it is one of the scariest chemicals found in many of our personal care products and it is a known carcinogen.

Research by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that 22 percent of personal care products and cosmetics may be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane. That’s 1 of every 4 products you use on yourself or your family.

As a label reader, the scariest part for me is, you won’t see it on the ingredient list. 1,4 dioxane is actually a trace contaminant or a byproduct made during the creation of other chemicals. Its not even needed in our products, but it is still there, not listed, and adding to the toxic stress we already fight on a day-to-day basis.

When 1,4 dioxane is found in mineral oils like petroleum jelly, it cannot be metabolized. This means it continues to build up in our bodies over time. Experts say mineral oil should not be used on children under 2 years of age because when inhaled it can cause reparatory distress. Poorly refined mineral oil can even cause certain skin cancers after prolonged repeated topical exposure. And they are not only found in petroleum jelly, but also in baby shampoos, baby lotions, and baby oils.
