Homemade Baby Wipes

Simple Recipe for Homemade Baby Wipes

Before Sequoia was born, we tried to prepare our home like all parents do. This included buying all the supplies we thought we would need before actually meeting our precious little one. Baby wipes are on the top of every new parent’s list, and that’s just what we set out to get.

Looking at the selection, I could not fathom spending the loot for the top of the line, organic, fragrance-free, premium baby wipes. Come on! We have a baby on the way and we’ve been spending all this extra money already.

So I bought what I thought was the safest option for what I felt like we could afford at the time. I felt total guilt after taking a closer look at the ingredients at home, because I recognized some of them as being on our family’s list of no-go’s.

Many ingredients found in baby wipes should be avoided, even those that are advertised to be “Natural”, “Pure”, and “Fragrance-Free”. You will not only find these harmful ingredients in the “natural” versions that Huggies and Pampers have to offer, but they’re also in Seventh Generation, Kirkeland’s Non-Scented, Parents Choice fragrance-free, Member’s Mark Premium, Simple Truth, Alphanova Organic, etc.

These are the Toxic Ingredients to Avoid:

Bronopol (also known as 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1 and 3-Diol): This preservative releases formaldehyde as it breaks down and it’s an irritant that really should not be used in any baby products.

Nourishing Lip Balm Recipe: Skip Those that Waste Your Money and Health

Have you ever noticed that people who use chapstick carry it with them and use it obsessively? Did you ever wonder if it was because of the ingredients put in it?

In most cases, the skin care industry and the people who decide what is put inside our products are only interested in making our products;

  • smell good,
  • feel good on initial contact, and
  • look good.

Many of the big companies do not care if it takes care of your skin long term or how it is detrimental to your overall health. They care about the instant gratification result. Other conventional skin care products, including lip balm, actually dry the skin out more so you continue to feel like you need more and have to purchase the product more. Have you ever seen the people who are totally addicted to putting lip balm or chapstick on and they do it countless times a day or hour? This is why.

When you use real products and ingredients that promote your wellness, you do not need much because your body is getting what it actually needs to heal itself overtime and feel good.

While we are working on doing amazing things for our body in the new year, concentrating on what we put inside is essential. In a perfect world, we are going to drink enough clean water, get all the nutrients our body needs from our diet, and the products we use will benefit our health and wellbeing.

But we do not live in a perfect world.

There are toxins in our water supplies and our soils have never been so depleted of nutrients. To combat that, we do the very best we can do everyday to help our bodies fight the toxic exposure we cannot control and focus on what we can control. We control the products that we bring in to our households and use on ourselves and families everyday.

Did you know that a lot of makeup, lipstick, and chapstick on the market have lead in them?! Continue reading “Nourishing Lip Balm Recipe: Skip Those that Waste Your Money and Health”

Chest Rub Recipe to Support Winter Wellness: Cold Season is Here

As we’re in the midst of cold season, I thought it would be important to let you know at least one way I use natural alternatives to support my winter wellness.

Real quick, I want to breakdown the chemical—1,4-dioxane— as it is one of the scariest chemicals found in many of our personal care products and it is a known carcinogen.

Research by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that 22 percent of personal care products and cosmetics may be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane. That’s 1 of every 4 products you use on yourself or your family.

As a label reader, the scariest part for me is, you won’t see it on the ingredient list. 1,4 dioxane is actually a trace contaminant or a byproduct made during the creation of other chemicals. Its not even needed in our products, but it is still there, not listed, and adding to the toxic stress we already fight on a day-to-day basis.

When 1,4 dioxane is found in mineral oils like petroleum jelly, it cannot be metabolized. This means it continues to build up in our bodies over time. Experts say mineral oil should not be used on children under 2 years of age because when inhaled it can cause reparatory distress. Poorly refined mineral oil can even cause certain skin cancers after prolonged repeated topical exposure. And they are not only found in petroleum jelly, but also in baby shampoos, baby lotions, and baby oils.

So here’s the good news. Continue reading “Chest Rub Recipe to Support Winter Wellness: Cold Season is Here”

Healthy and Homemade Zesty Italian Dressing Recipe

Store bought salad dressings are full of all sorts of questionable ingredients these days, not to mention excess fat, sugar, and sodium. Use this recipe to feel better about the food you are eating with incredible flavor!

Ingredients:

*Sub ½ tsp of each (Thyme, Basil, or Oregano) if you do not have these Young Living Essential Oils

Why use essential oils in cooking?

The Young Living Vitality line of essential oils are designed so that we can explore pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils to flavor our favorite foods or as a dietary supplement. They are made from the purest and most beneficial part of each plant. So if you’re looking to boost the nutritional content in your diet in a simple way, this is a perfect way to begin!

Note: Only use therapeutic grade oils that are approved for consumption. Do not use any old oil from the store that doesn’t completely disclose about their plants, their farms, and guarantee a Seed to Seal, chemical-free process. If you’re going the extra step, why muck it up with a plant that was laden with weed killers or other chemicals?

Directions:

  • Put all ingredients in jar and shake it up! Yeah, it’s that simple!
  • Pairs well with a mix of greens, mozzarella cheese, diced red pepper, baby tomatoes, cucumber, black olives, and chicken (all optional).

Beard Balm: Manliness Guide to Beard Oils

Maybe this recipe can help as a last minute gift for the ‘oh so hard to gift’ manly man in your life!

This recipe is without artificial fragrances, colors, and chemicals that are doing your health NO good.

It’s made of natural ingredients that can actually help to promote your health. And guess what, it’s super cheap and simple to make!!

In this recipe, we use essential oils for their aroma and health benefits. We also use beeswax, butter, coconut oil, and a carrier oil. I am big on keeping it simple, so start with the butter and carrier oil you currently have. For example, the butter and oil I currently have are shea butter and sweet almond oil. These are some of my favorites! I have listed some other options below, but you’ll find what works best for you.

For the essential oils, just start smelling them and pick a nice blend. There is a list below with some that will benefit your hair, skin, or give the manliness aroma you are looking for.

Regardless of what I thought would be best, I asked MY man,  Zach, to pick a blend he preferred. This is what he chose; Cedarwood Essential Oil and Peppermint Essential Oil.

Now I’ve never had a beard, but I can only imagine that growing one means you’re joining a league of extraordinary men. Or maybe it means you’re going to have dry, itchy, flakey skin on your chin that’s growing a wild nest of scraggily dead ends. Let it be the first, and oil up buttercup! Nourish your skin and hair and wear that beard with the confidence of a man who’s just grabbed the bull by its horns, who carries an axe through the rugged backwoods, and smells like a god. Laundry Soap: Stop Washing With Toxic Chemicals

You may love the smell of your favorite laundry detergent, or how your fabric softeners make your clothes feel on your skin, but it’s not worth the side effects.

Known side effects of conventional laundry detergents and fabric softeners include skin irritation, allergies, rashes, and headaches. Less often people can experience much worse side effects like brain toxicity, liver disease, respiratory failure, immune malfunction, hormone disruption, and cancer.

We have to be our own advocates and know the ingredients we are using in our detergents and fabric softeners. Most conventional products include chemical ingredients like parabens that are known endocrine disruptors, can cause developmental and reproductive issues, and other ingredients that can even cause cancer. Some of these include 1, 4-Dioxane, nonylphenol ethoxylates (Nonylphenol ethoxylates were banned in Canada since 1999 and by the EU), artificial colors, sulfates, propylene glycol, among others. Our government agencies have released studies that list some of these chemicals as probable human carcinogens, yet we continue to allow these products into our homes.  Even the cleaner products out there have synthetic fragrances, which are a combination of undisclosed chemicals.  These chemicals can be extremely toxic to our everyday wellness and have worse effects after being built up in our bodies overtime.

When your clothes are washed with these chemicals, they’re also absorbed into the skin, then into your bloodstream and all of your body systems. Clearly you cannot stop cleaning your clothes, but you can make a healthier choice.

This homemade recipe consists of only 4 Ingredients: Borax, Super Washing Soda, Castile Soap, and Essential Oils.

This recipe comes out to be about 13-27 cents per load or less if you use coupons or purchase in bulk. That is the same or less than using conventional products that are 95% water and filled with disclosed an undisclosed toxic chemicals. Deodorant Recipe: AT WHAT COST are you getting “24 Hour Protection”?!

It’s no secret, conventional deodorants are made up of toxic chemicals. A couple of years ago, I made the decision to make my own, and have never went back. I use 2 ounce glass container and make it about 2-3 times a year; so it lasts FOREVER.

The reason I do this is to save money and so I know what’s in it.

I used to shop for all of my beauty care and essential oils at the store until I did my research and found out that even the cleaner products have synthetic fragrances and other nasty chemicals like Alcohol, Butane, and Propane. These chemicals can reach your brain in a few seconds when inhaled and poison your insides, and they COST MORE. Instead I use essential oils and basic ingredients that actually support my health. You can use any of your favorite essential oils. Today I decided I’m going to use Tea Tree, Lemongrass, and Ylang Ylang.

The average woman applies hundreds of chemicals to her body a day – many of those before breakfast. Men, you’re doing the same, minus the makeup I’d assume.

Most deodorant has aluminum in it along with other nasty chemicals, and we slather it on our lymph nodes for around 70 years! Many scientists believe aluminum exposure may be linked to Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, or Breast Cancer.

When your body becomes overloaded with chemicals you may see it in something as catastrophic as cancer. But most of us feel it in other ways like feeling lethargic, having trouble sleeping, migraines, chronic inflammation and pain, skin issues, stress, and fear. The American Cancer Society says only 5 to 10 percent of cancer cases are from gene defects, so the other 90-95% of cases are in some ways under our control.
