Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair: Simple and Chemical Free

This one is for all my brunette babes….

Please do yourself a favor and trash the conventional dry shampoos in your bathroom cupboards. They are full of toxic chemical ingredients, like butane, propane, and synthetic fragrances. Stop giving yourself chemical headaches and exposing your loved ones to toxic chemicals by spraying them in your home and hair. This recipe is so simple, just give it a try.

Ingredients:

  • Equal parts Cocoa Powder (Blondies can leave this ingredient out) and
  • Arrowroot Powder (or Corn Starch)
  • drops of your favorite essential oils

*I change it up, but one of my favorite blends for this recipe is Lavender, Tea Tree, and Lemongrass.

Directions:

  1. I use a 2 ounce glass jar.
  2. Add the ingredients.
  3. Shake it up or stir.
  4. To apply, I use an extra oiling brush I found in the kitchen, but another great way is using a cosmetic blush brush.
  5. Enjoy fresh looking and smelling hair without chemical consequences!

Again, thank you for letting me share this recipe with you. This is me, sending my love to you and your families.

EcoTip: Plastic Bags

🌱I promised more information on how I’ve reduced my physical household garbage to around one bag per month. This is AWESOME and makes me feel SO good, but I’m still making mistakes all the time. It’s definitely a learning process, so here is a short eco tip for the week:

⚠️Plastic Bags…

Most mixed recycling curbside pickup programs do NOT recycle plastic bags. In fact, plastic bags being mixed in, hinders the recycling process significantly. Bags get stuck in the large round compressors and other machinery as they spin, by stretching and clinging. Need a visual? Watch this video…

🌲What do to…

Plastic bags such as your shopping bags, bread bags, and Ziplocs can all be dropped off at most large grocery stores or other retailers (you’ve seen the boxes in the front of the stores). The bags need to be clean and dry. So dump out your breadcrumbs, remove your receipts, and keep them dry.

EcoTip: One Month and One Bag of Trash

We did it! We went a month without throwing trash out through recycling and composting (and throwing Beast poo bags away at the Bark Park🐾).

This is it!!

First thing I learned, your trash does not smell when you compost.

Also, listen to your smart Aunt Mary’s. They are talented and know what they’re talking about. My beautiful Aunt Mary has been in the recycling and eco business for decades and has learned so much more than the average person ever will. Thank you for being an extremely patient and AMAZING teacher.

Laundry Soap: Stop Washing With Toxic Chemicals

You may love the smell of your favorite laundry detergent, or how your fabric softeners make your clothes feel on your skin, but it’s not worth the side effects.

Known side effects of conventional laundry detergents and fabric softeners include skin irritation, allergies, rashes, and headaches. Less often people can experience much worse side effects like brain toxicity, liver disease, respiratory failure, immune malfunction, hormone disruption, and cancer.

We have to be our own advocates and know the ingredients we are using in our detergents and fabric softeners. Most conventional products include chemical ingredients like parabens that are known endocrine disruptors, can cause developmental and reproductive issues, and other ingredients that can even cause cancer. Some of these include 1, 4-Dioxane, nonylphenol ethoxylates (Nonylphenol ethoxylates were banned in Canada since 1999 and by the EU), artificial colors, sulfates, propylene glycol, among others. Our government agencies have released studies that list some of these chemicals as probable human carcinogens, yet we continue to allow these products into our homes.  Even the cleaner products out there have synthetic fragrances, which are a combination of undisclosed chemicals.  These chemicals can be extremely toxic to our everyday wellness and have worse effects after being built up in our bodies overtime.

When your clothes are washed with these chemicals, they’re also absorbed into the skin, then into your bloodstream and all of your body systems. Clearly you cannot stop cleaning your clothes, but you can make a healthier choice.

This homemade recipe consists of only 4 Ingredients: Borax, Super Washing Soda, Castile Soap, and Essential Oils.

This recipe comes out to be about 13-27 cents per load or less if you use coupons or purchase in bulk. That is the same or less than using conventional products that are 95% water and filled with disclosed an undisclosed toxic chemicals. Life is What YOU Make it 🌻

I wanted an adventure.

I wanted to explore.

I wanted to go to Alaska.

I wanted to get lost in the TRUE wilderness, with WILD animals, big and small,

And experience the unworldly bugs (giant mosquitos are no joke) and flowers that were taller than me,

Walk on the spongy moss hummocks and wide open tundra, so far away from the material world,

Feel the icy winds flowing down off the glaciers as they calf off into a nearly frozen, silent bay, where pods of whales pass by and seals sit on the floating ice chunks and gaze back at you with dark beady eyes.

I wanted to experience the northern lights, in real time.

They always seem to go faster on TV, and be brighter in photos.

There was so much I experienced that I did not anticipate – the seasons, tundra colors, alpenglow, the extraordinary people that are now my family.

Then I met him, the one they called Stoner (it’s his last name, and yes – that

makes me a future Stoner),

With the big laugh and bigger smile.

And so we ended up here, and there, and a few other places (calling 6 states our home in 4 years – jeez, really?!) Continue reading “Life is What YOU Make it 🌻”

Wellness is different for everyBODY

To some this means mindfulness.

To some this means physical fitness and diet.

For some this is more spiritual than others.

The rest of us will find ourselves seeking wellness somewhere in between or in combination of all three of these ways of seeking happiness and abundance.

Mine might stem from my youth and dealing with my mother having a very rare lymphatic cancer at a very young age. I’m not sure how young I was when she was diagnosed, but I do know she fought for over 5 years and passed away 4 days before my 13th birthday.

Although my reason ‘why’ stems from my mother’s health struggles, I believe my true journey did not begin until the few most recent years. For me, my wellness has grown to be an abundance of all three; mind, body, and spiritual awareness. And in my search for a life beyond survival, I’ve also found that I have a passion for sharing.

This is exactly how this begins.

Thank you all for letting me share my wellness journey with you.

As always, wishing you Happy and Healthy Trails…

Deodorant Recipe: AT WHAT COST are you getting “24 Hour Protection”?!

It’s no secret, conventional deodorants are made up of toxic chemicals. A couple of years ago, I made the decision to make my own, and have never went back. I use 2 ounce glass container and make it about 2-3 times a year; so it lasts FOREVER.

The reason I do this is to save money and so I know what’s in it.

I used to shop for all of my beauty care and essential oils at the store until I did my research and found out that even the cleaner products have synthetic fragrances and other nasty chemicals like Alcohol, Butane, and Propane. These chemicals can reach your brain in a few seconds when inhaled and poison your insides, and they COST MORE. Instead I use essential oils and basic ingredients that actually support my health. You can use any of your favorite essential oils. Today I decided I’m going to use Tea Tree, Lemongrass, and Ylang Ylang.

The average woman applies hundreds of chemicals to her body a day – many of those before breakfast. Men, you’re doing the same, minus the makeup I’d assume.

Most deodorant has aluminum in it along with other nasty chemicals, and we slather it on our lymph nodes for around 70 years! Many scientists believe aluminum exposure may be linked to Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, or Breast Cancer.

When your body becomes overloaded with chemicals you may see it in something as catastrophic as cancer. But most of us feel it in other ways like feeling lethargic, having trouble sleeping, migraines, chronic inflammation and pain, skin issues, stress, and fear. The American Cancer Society says only 5 to 10 percent of cancer cases are from gene defects, so the other 90-95% of cases are in some ways under our control.
